Abstract:

Starting from the beginning of the 20th century, probability theory was greatly influenced by questions, mostly coming from physics, biology and lately from theoretical computer science, which required deep understanding of  random spatial/geometric  structure of processes. In sixties and seventhies it completely revolutionized probability theory.
It produced difficult and deep mathematical questions, solutions of which  involved various fields of mathematics, such as complex analysis, combinatorics, PDE's and other. Discussing several paradigm examples such as Ising model of ferromagnetism, Percolation, Diffusion Limited aggregation and First passage percolation, I will explain main difficulties, key ideas, and describe the state of the art of the field today.
