Abstract:
In this talk, I will first discuss the concept of virtual reality (VR), its history, application, and future. I will then discuss consumer virtual reality systems that enable researchers to conduct scientific experiments with naturally moving observers. Such systems usually include a large field-of-view, high resolution head mounted display together with a room-scale tracking system. Scientific research requires the position and orientation tracking of VR systems to have sufficient accuracy and precision. I will last present a study in which we used the leading-edge VR technique to systematically vary visual information in an immersive virtual environment. This allowed us to examine what visual strategies that people use to control their goal-oriented locomotion in the world. The findings can help to resolve the existing theoretical debate and be applicable to the design of effective navigational interfaces, biomimetic robots, and unmanned vehicles.
