2016 Seed Grant Research Award

The Seed Grant Research Award is targeted at researchers who are either in the early stages of project design and development, in the pilot phase of data collection and are preparing the basis for external grant applications, or are engaged in fresh collaborative and interdisciplinary research related to topical areas of social development research.  

AWARD AMOUNT: Up to 50,000 RMB


  1. The application may not exceed 5 pages not inclusive of the cover page.
  2. Please submit the completed application in a single PDF.
  3. Please use a font no smaller than 11 point and 1 inch page margins.
  4. Applications may be submitted in English or Mandarin Chinese.


  1. Please provide a cover page indicating PI name(s), Institutional Affiliation, Project title, and an approximately 200-word abstract. 
  2. Project Narrative: Please describe your proposed project in non-technical language.  Include information on the current state of your research, short-term and long-term outcomes of your project, and expectations for reporting, publication, and external grant application.
  3. Statement of Broader Impact: Please describe the impact of your research on your specific field and the broader implications for practice and policy related to areas of social development.  Please note the project’s relation to the Institute’s aims to promote collaboration, cultural understanding, and well-being (the Project Narrative and Statement of Broader Impact together should not exceed two pages).
  4. Timeline: Please describe in narrative form your anticipated timeline for the project.  Please also indicate if IRB approval is required before beginning your project and other permissions needed (not to exceed 1 page).  Note: the project may not exceed 24 months.
  5. Budget: Please provide an itemized budget for your project (up to 50,000 RMB), including a brief description of how each item relates to your research (not to exceed 1 page). 
  6. Qualifications: Please provide a brief biographical statement about your educational background, previous research in the area of study, publications related to the proposed project, collaborators, other qualifications, etc. (not to exceed 1 page inclusive of all researchers on study).


All current faculty affiliates of the institute are eligible to apply.
Note: If you have any active institute award, you are not qualified to apply until the current one expires.


The Institute for Social Development will host a research reception at the end of the academic year wherein grants recipients will present the results of their work. The Institute also requires a brief written report on the project appealing to a broad readership and suitable for posting on the Institute’s website. Recipients should acknowledge the support of the Institute (NYU-ECNU Institute for Social Development at NYU Shanghai) in all publications resulting from this award.


  1. Applications will be reviewed in two cycles:
    - First Cycle: Open from September 12, 2016 to October 15, 2016. The results will be announced by November 1, 2016
    - Second Cycle: Open from January 1, 2017 to February 15, 2017. The results will be announced by March 1, 2017.
  2. Applications must be received by midnight (Shanghai time) of the due date.
