Physics Institute Announces New Co-Director

On September 1, NYU Shanghai Professor of Physics and Mathematics, and NYU Global Network Professor Jun Zhang assumed the role of co-director for the NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics at NYU Shanghai. With a nearly thirty-year research career, Zhang is highly recognized for his work in fluid-structure interactions, biolocomotion, and geophysical fluid dynamics. This year, his contributions to fluid physics and related fields earned him election as a member of Academia Europaea.

Zhang replaces outgoing co-director Daniel Stein, Professor of Physics and Mathematics at NYU.  “Dan’s dedication helped shape NYU Shanghai’s Physics department and the Institute to its current state,” said Vice Provost for Research Anqi Qian. “Over the past decade, the Institute has gained significant recognition as a leader in cutting-edge research, showcasing a wealth of talent and potential. These achievements were highlighted during a period review conducted by a distinguished panel of external reviewers.”

Zhang will work alongside co-director Huang Guoxiang to further expand the Institute’s strategic focus, particularly by enhancing collaborations between affiliated institutes. “It has been a great pleasure to watch and participate as the institute grew steadily over the past decade”, said Zhang, “and it’s an honor to serve this energetic community.”

The NYU Shanghai community extends best wishes for the continued growth and success under Zhang’s leadership.
