About:
The Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Planning Grant is now open for application. It covers a number of disciplines as long as they are included in the “Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Project Application Code Table”, for example Philosophy, Economics, Sociology, History, Urban Science, Management, Political Science, Law, International Studies, Education, Journalism, interdisciplinary disciplines etc. Please refer to the official announcement for more details 

 

Funding Amount:

  • General Program: RMB 80,000
  • Young Scholar Program: RMB 60,000

 

Application:

  • There are three types of Research Topics:
    • Basic research should closely follow the frontiers of academic development and discipline building domestically and internationally, and have a high degree of subjectivity, originality and academic thinking;
    • Applied research should be based on the needs of the development of the Party and the country, focus on the comprehensive, strategic and forward-looking major theoretical and practical issues in the reform, opening up and innovative development of the country and Shanghai, and have a strong reality, relevance and decision-making reference value;
    • Interdisciplinary research should break down disciplinary barriers, promote the integration of philosophy and social sciences with new technologies, new methods and new paradigms, form interdisciplinary innovation teams, and promote original innovation on the basis of cross-integration.
  • Project application is conducted by discipline. For subject selection, please refer to the subject classification catalog in the "Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Project Application Code Table". For interdisciplinary research topics, the principle of "proximity priority" should be followed. Select one main discipline for application and list 1-2 related disciplines at the same time. Interdisciplinary research should be applied separately.

 

Funding Periods:
In principle, applied research projects should be completed within one year, while basic and interdisciplinary research projects should be completed within 1-2 years. The final results of the project will be selected and funded to publish.

 

Eligibility:

  • The PI should be either a) a Chinese citizen, or b) a researcher from Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan working in Mainland China. Foreign researchers may participate as team members depending on the actual research needs.
  • For the general program, the PI must have a senior professional title or a Ph.D. degree
  • For the Young Scholar Program, the male PI should be under 35 years old (born after October 10, 1989), the female PI should be under 40 years old (born after October 10, 1984).
  • One applicant can only apply for one project as a PI, and cannot participate in other projects during the same cycle.
  • PIs who have any ongoing projects of NOPSS, NSFC, MOE Humanities and Social Sciences and SPOPSS cannot apply.
  • If the applicant applies for NOPSS, NSFC or other national level grants in the same year, the members of his/her research team cannot apply for SPOPSS with the same or similar topics. If the applicant's national project is approved for funding this year, the applicant's SPOPSS project will not be approved.
  • If the content of the project is closely related to the ongoing or completed projects at the provincial level or above, the connection and difference between the project applied for and the project already implemented must be clearly stated in the "proposal", otherwise it will be considered as a duplicate application. It is not allowed to apply for the completion of multiple projects with basically the same or similar content.
