About:
The National Key R&D Program plans to fund a number of projects in the fields of manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, marine, medical engineering, transportation engineering and materials in 2024. Please refer to the official announcement for more details.

There are 7 major research directions (see below) that the National Key R&D Program aims to sponsor.

Each direction has specific funding areas. The program also provides a separate Young Scientist Program type, which encourages young researchers (under 40 years old) to lead the project. Please contact us at shanghai.researchgrants@nyu.edu to receive a detailed application guide.
Funding Amount and Period:
The National Key R&D Program plans to fund 65 projects in total. The funding amount is 10,000,000 - 20,000,000 RMB per project. For the Young Scientist Program, the funding amount is 3,500,000 - 5,000,000 RMB per project. The project period is five years in general.
Application Eligibility:
- The PI must have a senior professional title or a Ph.D. degree; and commit to work on the proposed project at least 6 month per year;
- The PI should be under 60 years old (born on or after January 1, 1964). The PI of Young Scientists Program should be under 40 years old (born on or after January 1, 1984). In principle, the age requirements for other team members are the same as above;
- A project can include up to four sub-projects (课题) and six participating institutions, with one PI for the project and one for each sub-project. The project must be submitted as a whole, covering all assessment indicators. The lead PI of the project can also lead one sub-project. The Young Scientist Project has no sub-project and is limited to three participating institutions.
- Each (sub-project) PI can only apply for one (sub)-project; The lead PI (PIs of sub-projects are excluded) of the ongoing National Key R&D Program, and Science & Technology Innovation 2030 – Major program cannot lead or participate in the application;
- The number of ongoing research projects (National Key R&D Program, and Science & Technology Innovation 2030 - Major Program) that the PI (and sub-project PI) and major participants of the proposed project participate in shall not exceed two. The "Inter-governmental International Cooperation" projects and the cooperation projects with HK, Macau and Taiwan with a funding less than 4 million RMB are excluded;
- The applicant can apply for and take on up to two projects or sub-award project of the following programs: National Key R&D Program (excluding Young Scientist projects, Science and Technology small and medium-sized enterprise projects, and International Cooperation projects, limited to PI and sub-project PI), Science and Technology Innovation 2030-Major Program (excluding Young Scientist projects, limited to PI and sub-PI), and NSFC Major Program (limited to PI and sub-PI), Basic Science Center Program (limited to PI and major participants), National Major Scientific Research Instrument Development Program (limited to PI and major participants with senior professional titles of department-recommended projects);
- Projects with an end date before December 31, 2024 are not counted towards the limit.

- The application portal for the National Key R&D Program will open from 8 AM (GMT +8) on August 19, 2024, to 4 PM (GMT +8) on September 20, 2024.
