The NYU-ECNU Institute for Social Development at NYU Shanghai, together with the Research Institute of Anthropology at ECNU, co-sponsored a seminar presented by Dr. Máximo Badaró in Anthropology on March 24, 2015 at ECNU Minhang Campus. Dr. Badaró, a visiting scholar for both Research Institutes, was invited to give a talk on “One of the Guys: Military Women, Paradoxical Individuality, and the Transformations of the Argentine Army." Welcomed by Professor Nicholas Tapp, director of the Research Institute of Anthropology at ECNU, the seminar attracted faculty members and students from ECNU School of Social Development as well as scholars interested in this field.
Using female soldiers in the Argentine Army as a case study, Dr. Badaró illustrates the complexity of the internal structure in the Army and how the existence of female soldiers challenged this internal structure. Specifically, Dr. Badaró found from his field research that the female soldiers in the Argentine Army created opportunities for themselves to be recognized which produced unforeseen yet positive institutional changes related to democratization. Through the lens of female soldiers, Dr. Badaró was able to redefine the key dimensions of the relationship among the Argentine Army, the government and the society.
Dr. Máximo Badaró received a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He is a researcher at the National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICET) in Argentina and Professor of Social Anthropology at the Universidad Nacional de San Martin in Buenos Aires (Argentina) where he co-directs the Center of Studies in Anthropology. He is specialized in political anthropology of institutions and elites. His current research during his residence as visiting scholar at the Institute is to examine luxury consumption in China.
