About:

NSFC established the Pilot Group Program of the RFIS-III, aiming to support foreign scientists with internationally recognized academic accomplishments and influence to lead research teams in cutting-edge fields of fundamental science.

Funding Scope:

The 2023 NSFC Pilot Group Program of the RFIS-III is now open for application, and this program aims to fund about 12 research projects in 17 areas. For more details, please refer to the official announcement (English ver.).

Note: When filling in the application code in the application form, the applicant should select the application code from the corresponding application codes mentioned above, and try to select the secondary application code (4-digit number). For applicants in the field of "Statistical physics and complex social systems", please first select the acceptance code T04 assigned by the Department of Interdisciplinary Science, and then fill in the application form by selecting the application codes of no less than two departments from A-H according to the content of the research.

Funding Amount & Period:

NSFC will provide up to 4,500,000 RMB per project (Direct Cost). The funding period is three years. Applicants should fill out 1/1/2024 to 12/31/2026 for the research period in their applications.

Eligibility Requirements:

•    The applicant must have foreign nationalities;
•    Each applicant must be a senior professional title holder (i.e., Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor);
•    Possessing internationally recognized academic achievements and influence;
•    During the funding period, the applicant should commit at least 9 months/per year to work at the host institution;
•    Each applicant must form a research team of no less than five people (including the applicant);
•    Those who have received funding from the NSFC Research Fund for International Scientists, NSFC Major Program, NSFC Key Program, NSFC Major Research Plan, NSFC Distinguished Young Scientist Program, NSFC Innovative Research Groups Program, and NSFC Fundamental Science Center Program (including funded projects in 2023) as PIs cannot apply;
•    In order to ensure PIs focusing on research work, the PI shall not apply for any other grant programs except the NSFC Distinguished Young Scientist Program during the funding period;
•    The restriction “two projects allowed in total applied or led by the same senior professional title holder” DOES NOT apply to this program;
•    Other restrictions stated in the 2023 NSFC Grants Application Guideline apply to this program. 
•    Each project cannot have more than two cooperative institutions (A total of no more than three institutions).
