About:
The program aims to cultivate and select a group of academic leaders who are at the forefront of world science and technology, as well as technical leaders driving industrial innovation in global frontier and core technology fields, to promote Shanghai's scientific and industrial development, providing strong talent support for building a globally influential innovation hub.
There are two types, and each type will support around 60 awardees. The funding period is 3 years. This is the former Shanghai Excellent Academic/Technical Leaders Program. For more information, please refer to the official announcement.
Program Types:
1. Excellent Academic Leader (拔尖项目科技平台)
- Applicants should be a Chinese national, be under 50 years old (born on and after 1/1/1975), and have accumulated at least 12 months of social insurance contributions in Shanghai within the past two years.
- Applicants should have experience in leading a national research project as an independent PI and have a stable research team.
- Applicants who have been funded by national-level talent program cannot apply.
- Applicants who have been funded by the Shanghai Magnolia Program (all schemes) and the Oriental Talent Program (including group, leadership, entrepreneurship, excellence, and teacher programs) cannot apply.
- Applicants whose Oriental Talent Program Scheme E (东方英才青年项目) is still ongoing cannot apply.
2. Excellent Young Academic Leader(青年项目科技平台)
- Applicants should be a Chinese national, be under 40 years old (born on and after 1/1/1985), and have accumulated at least 12 months of social insurance contributions in Shanghai within the past two years.
- Applicants should have experience in leading a project at the provincial level or above as an independent PI, and have great potential for academic innovation and development.
- Applicant has formed or is expected to be formed a stable scientific research team.
- Applicants who have been funded by national-level talent program cannot apply.
- Applicants who have been funded by the Shanghai Magnolia Program (all schemes), Pujiang Program and the Oriental Talent Program (including group, leadership, entrepreneurship, excellence, teacher, and young scholar programs) cannot apply.
This program is quota-based, and NYU Shanghai can nominate one candidate for each type. An internal review and selection process will be arranged if necessary. If you are interested to apply, please let us know by July 12, 2026. See the important Dates listed in below for details.
