Abstract:
Dissipative optical solitons are a special pulse with delicate balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, as well as gain and loss. Their development has a significant implication on ultrafast optics, nonlinear optics, matter waves and hydrodynamics. In the last decade, generating dissipative solitons by coherently pumping high-Q microresonators has emerged and revolutionized the chip-scale frequency comb technique. It also provides an elegant method attain femtosecond pulse trains with a repetition rate of GHz-THz, which is hard to access for conventional mode-locked lasers. In this talk, I will introduce the basic principle of microresonator solitons and methods to generate these new solitons. I will discuss the breathing dynamics of dissipative soliton in optical microresonators, and the microresonator soliton interaction dynamics between co-propagating and counter-propagating soliton pairs. Then, I will discuss how to use the highly mutual coherent counter-propagating solitons for dual-comb spectroscopy with GHz resolution in the mid-infrared.
