About the Workshop:

The workshop focuses on child development in China, where rapid, large-scale social, cultural, and economic changes have taken place in the last four decades. The Chinese context provides a unique and exciting opportunity to examine socialization processes and child development in the family and school contexts in the backdrop of drastic social transitions. The workshop will discuss how China’s changing social context in the past few decades influences child development. Topics to be discussed including the characteristics of parenting and grandparenting practices in contemporary Chinese families, the development of children in two-child families, and children’s socioemotional and academic development. Research in this area will reveal the mechanism through which social changes influence child development, which will in turn have practical implications for parents, educators and policy-makers in China.
