Salon to Connect Faculty with Top-Tier Undergraduate Students

The NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics at NYU Shanghai co-hosted the “Growing Up in Physics Salon” with ECNU School of Physics and Electronic Science where faculty met top-tier ECNU undergraduate students on November 23rd, 2022. Around 30 junior students selected from ECNU’s top undergraduate programs from that school attended the Salon.   Professor E Wu - who is a member of the Institute and a Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy of that School - moderated the event. Institute Faculty, Professors Tim Byrnes, Hanghui Chen, and Jun Zhang participated in the Salon.

Through lively discussions, the Salon offered the students a glimpse into the research careers and progress of the three scholars, as well as their potential opportunities at the Institute and faculty’s labs. These opportunities range from institute seminars and colloquia, research internships, to graduate programs.

Professor Wu felt that the students were quite intrigued by the Salon’s format where they heard professors talk about research, career stories and their expectations for lab students in an informative and engaging way. “It has brought the students closer to the professors, and opened up opportunities for them to have further communications.”

Professor Byrnes enjoyed the conversations that he had with the students, commenting that “my impression of the students is that they were exactly the type that we would like to work with. It was great to get ourselves out there and interact with the students who are passionate about the work that we do.”
