Topic:
Collective Dynamics of Motile Bacteria
Date & Time:
Wednesday, November 4, 2015 - 14:30 to 15:30
Speaker:
Hepeng Zhang, Department of Physics and Astronomy and Institute of Natural Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Location:
Room 307, Pudong Campus, 1555 Century Avenue, Shanghai (浦东校区,教学楼 307 室)

The seminar is sponsored by NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics at NYU Shanghai.

Abstract:

Bacteria are native inhabitants and efficient swimmers of the microscopic world. Interesting collective dynamics emerges in systems of interacting motile bacteria and a few examples will be discussed in this talk. First, I will show bacteria confined in micro-structures can collectively generate transport flow and function as a microscopic pump. Then, I will focus on collective phenomena of free-swimming bacteria and discuss how bacteria form active clusters and develop turbulence-like flow pattern at zero Reynolds number.
