The Center for Society, Health, and Medicine (CSHM) advances the humanistic study of medicine and health systems––globally and locally––by turning critical attention towards the institutions, histories, and practices that define global health today. CSHM supports student scholarship and research, strengthens ties between faculty members working in a broad range of areas related to medicine and the health sciences, and creates opportunities for external scholars and practitioners to participate in the dynamic academic environment of NYUSH.
The academic aim of CSHM is to create links between scholars engaged in the humanistic study of health and illness from various fields, including anthropology, history, bioethics, sociology, clinical medicine, science and technology studies, social work, nursing, and public health sciences. The programmatic aim of CSHM is to foster broad disciplinary intersections in order to give students the chance to consider the reach and application of their learning in different areas, thus reinforcing the interdisciplinary character of academic programs at NYUSH.
