Topic:
International Trauma Work In Developing Countries: Developing Individual, Family & Community Resilience
Date & Time:
Monday, March 14, 2016 - 12:30 to 14:00
Speaker:
Carol Tosone, NYU Silver School of Social Work
Location:
Room 210, 1555 Century Avenue, Pudong New Area, Shanghai

Abstract:

International trauma work requires a familiarity with and respect for the cultural norms, practices, and laws of the region under study. Rather than colonizing the region with existing Western approaches to individual-based practice interventions, international trauma work requires working with local representatives and community leaders to ensure that indigenous community practices are incorporated into a comprehensive community-based plan. Emphasis is not on diagnosis of individual psychopathology, but rather on incorporating existing community practices to enhance individual, family and community functioning. Building community resiliency is the core goal of international intervention.  The presenter will incorporate examples from her work in Afghanistan and Indonesia to illustrate these points.
