Topic:
Topics on the Mathematics of Nematic Liquid Crystal I
Date & Time:
Thursday, November 12, 2015 - 14:45 to 16:15
Speaker:
Yuning Liu, NYU Shanghai
Location:
Room 371, GEO Building, Zhongbei Campus, ECNU

The seminar is sponsored by NYU-ECNU Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU Shanghai.

Abstract:

In this talk, we will give a general introduction to various models for nematic liquid crystals such as Onsager's hard rod model, Landau De-Gennes Q-tensor model and Oseen-Frank model.  Some analytic results concerning the relationship between these models will be discussed.  For example, by means of the Bingham closure procedure, Onsager's model can be reduced to the Q-tensor model; And through the uniaxial limit, both Onsager's model and Landau De-Gennes model will lead to the Oseen-Frank model.
