Abstract:

We consider an abstract, non-inertial particle coalescence model under the influence of a Gaussian white noise with prescribed space-covariance, modelling the influence of a turbulent flow. We prove a scaling limit for particle density that in particular shows that coalescence is enhanced by turbulence. We define a spatial surrogate of Stokes number, and use our theorem to show that coalescence is qualitatively increasing with respect to Stokes, for small-moderate values. Time permitting, we equip our model with physical constants and confirm, subject to approximations, a formula due to Saffman-Turner (1956) of the average coalescence rate. Based on a joint work with Franco Flandoli.
